A new and innovative formula by Douglas Laboratories has hit the market. While relatively new to us, Wobenzym® (formerly Phlogenzym®) has been made in Germany since the 1960’s. Developed by leading scientists and published in over 200 clinical trials, Wobenzym® Plus is a unique enzyme formula that contains both plant and animal enzymes. However, this product is not intended to aid with digestion. The capsules provide an enteric coating, which enhances absorption by transporting the active molecules further into the intestines.
In research, Wobenzym® PS helped maintain healthy joint and immune function. It also provided temporary relief from everyday aches and pains, muscle soreness, and supported fast recovery from over-exertion. This is accomplished by supporting numerous processes in the body by allowing reactions to happen that would otherwise not occur. Bromelain, trypsin, and rutin make up the potent enzyme blend in Wobenzym® PS.
Of all activities mentioned, the impact that Wobenzym® PS has on muscles is the most memorable. In research, systemic enzyme therapy (SET) acted as a fibrinolytic, meaning they cleared excess fibrin. Fibrin is a fibrous protein responsible for blood clotting. It plays a major role in healing and inflammation. However, excess fibrin can accumulate in the soft tissue (fat, muscles, blood vessels, tendons) and hinder the healing process. Clots can also build up in the heart and brain. Clearing out these potentially harmful clots supported microcirculation, which brought more oxygen back into the soft tissue and reduced pain in research.
One study in particular compared oral enzymes to Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). Not only did the oral enzymes compare to NSAIDs, but they had a 50% higher success rate with less side effects.
