It’s well known that long term bed rest can reduce lean body mass. Nutrition becomes very important during this period to try to blunt this effect.
We have already written about the benefits of the amino acid metabolite HMB. A new research study looked into whether or not HMB could reduce lean body mass loss in adults who were bedridden.
Subjects were given either 3 grams of HMB or placebo while being bedridden for ten days. Those in the HMB group had significantly less lean body mass loss than placebo.
