The health benefits of omega-3’s have been extensively researched. They are our bodies main way of controlling inflammation. What you may not know so much is about the relationship of omega-3’s to omega-6’s.
The typical western diet is heavily weighted towards the 6’s, which in excess can increase inflammation. So just taking your omega-3’s without also being aware of your omega-6 intake can be like taking one step forward and one step back. The main way we get omega-6 is though vegetable oils, dairy fat and grain fed meats.
These fats have long term effects. A new review looked at the ratio of omega-3/omega-6 in relation to cognitive decline. What they found was that the ratio of 6’s to 3’s was related to brain composition, cognitive decline, and incidence of dementia.
