There are up to 100 billion neurons in the brain sending and receiving messages for normal function in all parts of the body. Neurons are connected by Neurites that receive messages at the neuronal membranes and the long thin carriers of  the messages called Axons. Energy to make this happen is formed in each cell’s mitochondria from food and nutrients.

Myelin …Protector of Nerves

Myelin is a fatty coating on the axons that protects and enables communication.

Think of myelin as the “plastic on the wire”. When Myelin gets damaged, the messaging between neurons is disrupted. Myelin can be damaged by a few common molecules in the body. These include high glucose—usually from too much sugar, starch, or alcohol—and the amino acid homocysteine. Homocysteine is part of the methylation pathway and can build up if your body lacks the genetic ability to process specific vitamins like methyl folate, B12, or P5P (B6). Inflammation can also contribute to damage.  Curcumin in the Theracurmin® or NovaSOL® forms and Boswellia as ApresFlex® inhibit two important inflammatory pathways.

Repairing Myelin

The body has two primary types of cells that repair myelin. Mature Schwann cells in the peripheral nerves and mature Oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system.

  • The flavonoid Luteolin in a bioavailable form has shown to be one of the best activators of these cells’ maturation. Additional molecules necessary for repairing myelin are Adenosyl B12 and Phosphatidyl Serine.
  • There are three additional brain and nerve repair molecules – The NRF2 gene to activate endogenous antioxidant formation, and repair molecules Nerve Growth Factor, and Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor, which are supported by Theracurmin® and Lion’s Mane fruiting body hot water extract.
  • Additional Natural molecules that have shown benefit in research to support myelin are Acetyl L-Carnitine Arginate (19% increase in neurite formation), Magnesium Threonate, and Omega-3 fats.
Maintaining Healthy Nerve Function

Mitochondrial function for neuronal energy is supported by molecules like NAD+, Urolithin A and antioxidants.

  • Tinnitus: Natural molecules that have shown support for vestibular health and function is the antioxidant Pycnogenol at 150 mg per day (87% improvement at 6 months).
  • Pain: Patients with neuropathic pain sleep disturbances on 600mg 2x PEA resulted in significantly improved sleep.
