Collagen is the primary protein in all parts of the human body including bones, skin, joints, hair and many more.  Collagen production begins to decline in a person’s mid-20’s, so supplementation becomes a necessity to maintain the integrity of body tissues. Choosing the best collagen supplement can be confusing. Most collagen peptides do not have superior bioavailability which means the body may not be able to use them effectively.

Several highly bioactive collagen peptides have been isolated and studied. Using enzymatic breakdown rather than the typical acid breakdown process, these have a much smaller size than other peptides which makes it easier for them to enter the cells. Researchers have reported multiple benefits of these superior collagen peptides.

Fortibone® at 5 grams for 3 months in postmenopausal women reduced two markers of bone turnover by 13.1% and 11.4%. In a 4-year study of women with osteoporosis, 5 grams per day promoted increased bone density of 7% in the spine and femoral head.

Fortigel® at 5 grams for 3 months reduced hip and knee pain during normal daily activities in subjects with osteoarthritis. In young athletes, it reduced activity related-knee pain. 40% of subjects experienced complete pain relief. Fortigel® was found to stimulate the intracellular matrix that protects and repairs tendons and ligaments. It also supported a 50% increase in elastin production.

Verisol® at 2.5 grams per day for 24 weeks was associated with an increase of 12% nail growth and 42% less nail breakage. 88% of study participants saw results in 4 weeks. Verisol® reduced skin wrinkles in 8 weeks and increased elastin in the skin by 18% . In a group of women with visible cellulite, supplementation with Verisol® for 6 months reduced the appearance of cellulite by 11%. The effects were more pronounced in healthy weight women, so for overweight women it may take longer to see an effect.

Medical grade hydrolyzed liquid collagen has been used in the medical field for over 30 years. It is produced in a patented enzyme process that predigests collagen into smaller pieces for better absorption.  Liquid collagen helps build lean muscle mass and prevents muscle breakdown, and it also improves wound healing.
