Studies report that up to 18% of people experience Tinnitus which can be described as buzzing, ringing or some other sound in the ears, without a sound being present. There are multiple causes for tinnitus such as hearing loss, especially noise related hearing damage. There can also be a problem with how the cochlear fluid in the ear moves. In some cases of high blood pressure, the turbulent movement of blood through the ears can be heard. Damage to the tiny hairlike structures lining the ear can impair signaling to the brain causing the brain to “turn up the volume.” Caffeine, nicotine and alcohol can make symptoms worse. Tinnitus can cause sleep problems, depression and poor concentration.
Nutrition Factors
- Lower Zinc levels were found in study participants with tinnitus and normal hearing and another study reported a 45% increased risk of developing symptoms within 10 years in those with lower zinc status. Zinc supplementation at 50 mg per day for two months improved symptoms in 82% of study subjects.
- Magnesium levels were reported to be lower in tinnitus patients. Supplementation with magnesium for 3 months reduced tinnitus symptoms. Results for some were seen as early as 1 month.
Natural molecules that provide support
- After 3 months of supplementation with the anti-oxidant Pycnogenol at 150mg per day, 45.4% of study participants were symptom free and at 6 months 87.3% were symptom free.
- Korean Red Ginseng at 3000mg per day for 4 weeks improved symptoms and improved emotional and mental health.
- Lemon bio-flavonoids at 500 mg per day for 10 weeks– noise in the ear was reduced by 32% and individuals reported a 55% improvement of all symptoms.
