Quality sleep is critical to good overall health.  These are the factors that inhibit and promote initiating and staying sleep.  Shifting between Rapid Eye Movement (REM) and Slow Wave Sleep (SWS) are necessary for quality sleep, brain repair and function while limiting weight gain.  Brains are very individual so it may require identifying the best molecules and dose for each individual.

The Initiators

Melatonin or its precursor 5HTP initiate sleep.  Preferably sustained release.

Amino acid Theanine supports increased levels of calming Alpha Brain waves.

These substances activate the brain relaxing GABA pathway:

  • Ashwagandha extract. Best forms are KSM-66 or 35% withanolides
  • Pharma GABA
  • Valerian extract, Lemon Balm and Saffron all support this pathway
  • CBD

Quiet the excitatory Glutamate pathway and neuronal calcium influx.

  • Magnesium Acetyl Taurinate and Magnesium Threonate both pass the blood brain barrier and inhibit calcium influx into the neurons.

Avoid excitatory Caffeine and chocolate (theobromine) after lunch.

Wear amber sunglasses or blue light filter if using screens at night.

Staying Asleep

Managing Glucose & Cortisol

  • Avoid nighttime alcohol and sugar.
  • Avoid working, stress, and high intensity exercise at night due to increased cortisol.
  • Ashwagandha KSM-66 extract and Relora (magnolia) lowered cortisol 26% and 18% respectively.
Getting Back to Sleep
  • Any of the above except timed release melatonin.
  • Keep mild Magnesium, Cortisol, GABA pathway and Skullcap formulas at bedside if waking during the night.
Quality of Sleep, Health and Menopause
  • Body heat loss during sleep increased reparative Slow Wave Sleep. • Cool down with lower room temperature and Glycine. Magnesium Glycinate can be an option.
  • Baicalin from the plant Baikal Skullcap increased SWS and REM. Take when dark and middle of the night.
  • Rhubarb Root extract ERr 731 (Estrovera) study results showed reductions of 90% in hot flashes and 71% in sleep disturbances.
