Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It serves many purposes such as glucose and blood pressure regulation, decreasing inflammation, and it plays a role in the sleep-wake cycle. When the body is exposed to stress, cortisol is released as part of the “fight or flight” response. It provides a quick burst of energy and physical and mental alertness.
